About Nepal

The blue Maharbharat Hills

Cradled between India to the south and Tibet to the North and roughly the size of Austria and Switzerland, Nepal forms a rectangle on the southern slopes of the Himalaya, and is without exception, the most stunning country imaginable. With an amazing variety of ethnic groups and cultures; of landscapes which change from tropical jungle to high glacial peaks within a distance of 150 km, it is easy to see why travellers have always been drawn to this Himalayan Kingdom. Nepal can be divided into 3 main regions:

Typical mid hill village

1. The Terai region is composed of a 30km wide belt of fertile alluvial plain on the southern border of the country. Home to tiger, rhino, elephant, crocodile and Gangeatic dolphin it is flat, hot, humid and no good for flying.

2. The "foothills" south of the Greater Himal, are made up of several ranges of mountains. The Mahabharat and Pahar ranges with peaks ranging in altitude from 1500-3000m is the place to fly.

3. The Himalaya or "abode of snow" in Sanskrit is what most people picture when they think of Nepal. Of the 31 Himalayan peaks over 7600m, 22 lie in Nepal, including eight of the world's 14 highest giants. Some pretty awesome top to bottoms here.
